Why carve my own Jade ?
For those of you looking for personal gift you have made yourself to give someone special or that hard to buy for person, and to feel the pleasure and satisfaction of hand carving your own.

Why choose Jade Art Carvings ? 
To enjoy the unique experience and the history of Jade (Pounamu). The opportunity is here to carve your own jewel – a Maori tradition.

Knowledge or skills needed ?
No previous carving or drawing experience is needed. All equipment and materials are provided.

How long it takes to carve ?
A simple piece can be carved in as little as 2 hours up to 2 days for a complicated item, under the careful guidance of owner operator Brett Phillips.

What is the range of prices ?
Prices start at $30.00 for a simple design and up to $155.00 for a more detailed pendant.
I always discuss with you before starting your carving experience.

My pendant is unique ?
Yes, because you have hand carved and enjoyed to create it.

Step 1 : Choose a template or design your own

You will choose a template from those offered or use your creativity design it yourself.

Please note : you need to be flexible with your creation because you may not be able to achieve an exact copy of your design. Each item is unique and the stone may need modifications to ensure a good result.

Step 2 : Selecting the Jade

There are lots of different kinds of Jade. Names are mostly based on the color and river it has been recovered from.
Jade used in my workshop is local New Zealand West Coast Jade.
You get the choice of Jade you like.

Step 3 : Cutting & carving

Once you have your design drawn onto your slice of Jade it is time to trim off the excess and start you on your way shaping and carving your piece.

This is the most important and enjoyable stage.
It is during the shaping and carving stage that you will get to see your design come to life in your hands.
This is achieved through the use of different burrs and grinders.

Step 4 : Finishing

Time to remove any unwanted scratches, sanding polishing and buffing finish your work ether to just a mat finish or a high polish.

Choose the cord such as : color, bound or not, etc.
